Pope Leo XIV visits Istanbul’s Blue Mosque PHOTO
Pope Leo XIV has visited the historic Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque) in Istanbul, signalling the Catholic Church’s commitment to interfaith dialogue with the Muslim world.
According to the Vatican press office, in keeping with tradition, the Pope removed his shoes before entering the mosque and wore white socks inside, Caliber.Az reports.
He is only the third pontiff to visit the iconic site, following Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis.
During the visit, Pope Leo XIV was accompanied by the head of Türkiye’s Directorate of Religious Affairs, Muslim spiritual leader Safi Arpagus. The Pope listened attentively to explanations about the mosque and demonstrated respect for Islamic traditions.
“The Pope visited the mosque in silence, in a spirit of reflection and careful listening, showing deep respect for this sacred place and for the faith of those who gather here to pray,” the Vatican press office said.
Built in the early 17th century, the Blue Mosque was for centuries a central religious site of the Ottoman Empire. Its name derives from the more than 21,000 turquoise tiles decorating its walls and dome.
The mosque’s high vaulted ceiling is illuminated by 260 windows, giving the building its distinctive character.
