Powerful cyclone hits US, causes heavy snow, flight disruptions
A powerful winter cyclone has swept across the eastern United States, bringing heavy snowfall and widespread flight disruptions.
More than 2,000 flights have already been cancelled due to the storm, and millions of residents are feeling the impact of the severe weather, Caliber.Az reports, citing American media.
The cyclone formed on January 31 off the coast of Carolina in the Atlantic Ocean.
Strengthening winds and intense precipitation quickly developed into a blizzard, with initial snowfall reported in eastern Tennessee, both Carolinas, and southern Virginia. Up to 8 cm of snow fell in northeastern Tennessee.
Meteorologists also report record-low temperatures. Miami is expected to see a cold snap reminiscent of the 1930s, while wind speeds could reach levels not felt since the 1920s.
Forecasts indicate that snowfall intensity will slightly decrease on February 1, but cold conditions are expected to persist across the US East Coast for at least the coming week.
