Presidential race officially kicks off in Lithuania
The political election campaign for the presidential elections to be held in May 2024 has begun in Lithuania.
The Main Election Commission of the Baltic Republic reported this, TASS reports.
“Six months before voting day, the start of the political election campaign is officially announced,” the message says.
From this day forward, parties can register their candidates with the Central Election Commission. The same applies to those candidates who intend to run on their own.
According to the resolution of the Sejm (parliament), which sets the date, the presidential elections will take place on May 12, 2024. If a second round is required, it will take place on May 26.
The intention to run for the post of head of state was announced by Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte, ex-commander of the armed forces, reserve lieutenant general Valdas Tutkus, mayor of the city of Kazlu Ruda Mantas Varaška, former Minister of Health Aurelijus Veryga during the covid pandemic, professor of medicine Eduardas Vaitkus, public figure Antanas Kandrotas and former NATO Deputy Secretary General Giedrimas Jeglinskas.
The current president, Gitanas Nausėda, who may seek a second term, has not yet spoken out on this issue.
