Qatar says Iranian asset unfreezing discussed in US-Iran memorandum talks
The issue of unfreezing Iranian assets was discussed as part of preparations for a memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, Majid bin Mohammed al-Ansari, advisor to Qatar’s prime minister and official spokesperson for Foreign Ministry said.
Responding to questions about conflicting reports regarding the fate of $24 billion in frozen Iranian funds, the diplomat said he could not provide further details until the agreement is formally concluded, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
“What I can confirm is that all these issues were discussed as part of the memorandum of understanding. I would prefer to wait until the [document] is signed and confirmed by all parties, after which the text will be provided to journalists,” he said at a briefing.
Al-Ansari also said Pakistan would continue to serve as the primary mediator in negotiations between Washington and Tehran, adding that Qatar does not intend to take over that role.
The comments come amid ongoing diplomatic efforts involving the United States, Iran, and Pakistan, which is acting as a mediator. Officials from the three countries confirmed on June 14 that a 60-day ceasefire agreement had been reached between Washington and Tehran.
The deal is expected to be formally signed in Geneva on June 19.
