Qatar summons Iranian ambassador over missile strike on US airbase
Qatar’s Foreign Ministry has summoned Iran’s ambassador to Doha, Ali Saleh Abadi, to formally protest the missile attack on the US Al Udeid Airbase that took place on June 23.
In the statement, Qatar condemned the strike carried out by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on the strategic US military base, Caliber.Az reports, citing Qatar’s foreign ministry.
The ministry emphasised its strong denunciation of the attack and reiterated that Qatar reserves the right to respond in accordance with international law.
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi emphasised to the Iranian ambassador that this breach is entirely incompatible with the spirit of good neighborly relations and the strong ties between Qatar and the Islamic Republic of Iran, particularly given Qatar's consistent advocacy for dialogue with Iran and its persistent diplomatic efforts. The minister also underscored the urgent need to resume dialogue and diplomatic channels without delay to settle disagreements and unresolved matters, prevent escalation, and cease military actions in order to promote stability both regionally and internationally.
US President Donald Trump has announced a “complete and total” ceasefire between Israel and Iran, set to be phased in over the next 24 hours after a frenetic day of conflict in the region. The announcement follows an attack on US forces at Al Udeid airbase in Qatar on June 23, after Tehran said it would retaliate for the US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, with the Qatari authorities saying missiles were successfully intercepted.
