Qatari LNG tanker crosses Hormuz in first transit in three weeks

30 July 2026 11:54

A Qatari liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker has crossed the Strait of Hormuz along a route coordinated with Iran, marking the first such shipment in three weeks, according to Iranian media.

The vessel completed the transit with its Automatic Identification System (AIS) active “without any problems” before entering open waters, the Fars news agency reported.

The passage comes amid ongoing discussions over maritime navigation in the strategically vital waterway. Iran and Oman held talks in Tehran on July 24–25 to address shipping routes through the strait.

According to Bloomberg, one proposal under consideration involves opening a so-called “middle corridor” for vessel transit. Axios reported that an agreement on resuming navigation could be reached by the end of the weekend.

The United States has said the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) does not have the authority to dictate shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz.
