Romania acquires operator of Moldova’s only port with Black Sea access
Romania has finalised the acquisition of the company operating Moldova’s only port with access to the Black Sea and international waterways.
The deal, completed on April 21, involves the purchase of ICS Danube Logistics, which manages the Port of Giurgiulești. The sale followed a year-long search for a new investor organised with the participation of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Caliber.Az reports per Romanian media.
Romania’s Transport Minister Ciprian Șerban described the acquisition as a strategic investment that will expand the country’s transport capabilities and strengthen the role of the Port of Constanța as a regional hub. He added that the Giurgiulești facility could play a significant role in future logistics projects linked to Ukraine’s reconstruction.
Located on a short stretch of the Danube River, the Port of Giurgiulești remains Moldova’s only port with direct access to international maritime routes and the capacity to handle seagoing vessels.
Its development dates back to a territorial exchange between Moldova and Ukraine in the 1990s, when Chișinău secured access to a section of the Danube coastline in return for granting a transit corridor in Ukraine’s southern Odesa region.
