Russia, Indonesia to hold first-ever joint military drills

19 October 2024 18:20

Russia and Indonesia are set to conduct their first-ever joint naval exercises, named "Orruda," in November, as announced by the Russian ambassador to Indonesia on October 19.

According to Sergey Tolchenov, a contingent from Russia's Pacific Fleet will visit the port of Surabaya, featuring three modern corvettes.

"Such friendly visits by our ships occur almost annually," he explained in an interview with Russian media, per Caliber.Az.

Tolchenov also noted that Indonesia reciprocates by visiting Russian ports. "In November, coinciding with the visit of our ships, we will hold the inaugural large-scale naval exercises between Russia and Indonesia," he said, indicating that these drills could become a regular event every two years.

He added that future exercises might even take place in waters closer to the Russian Far East. "There are many possibilities for cooperation here," the ambassador remarked.

The name "Orruda" symbolizes the national emblems of both countries, combining the Russian eagle (Oryol in Russian) and Indonesia's garuda, the mythical king of birds. "Both symbols will be visible for our friends and adversaries alike," Tolchenov stated.

He emphasized that Russia's joint military exercises with various nations are not aimed at third parties.

On July 31, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto met with Russian President Vladimir Putin during a working visit to Moscow. Putin referred to Subianto as a friend of Russia and highlighted the enduring friendly relations between the two nations, which have been established over decades. He also acknowledged the successful growth of trade and economic ties between Indonesia and Russia.
