The Russian peacekeeping contingent's last column is leaving Azerbaijan's Karabakh economic region.
On the morning of May 8, the peacekeepers' personnel and equipment left the liberated (from Armenian occupation) territories of Azerbaijan and drove through the territory of the Barda district, Oxu.Az reports.
Following the conclusion of the 44-day Second Karabakh War between Armenia and Azerbaijan, a tripartite statement was signed on November 10, 2020, involving Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Russia. As per the agreement, Russian peacekeeping forces were deployed in specific areas of the Karabakh region for a period of five years. Their main task was to monitor and uphold peace in the region.
In April 2024, Russian peacekeepers started withdrawing from Azerbaijan's Karabakh region. The first group of peacekeepers left the observation post at the Khudavang monastery complex in the Kalbajar region, officially handing it over to Azerbaijani police. The withdrawal effort also included the evacuation of their headquarters in the town of Khojaly.
