Russian researchers reveal new geographic feature in Antarctica

05 April 2026 08:59

Russian scientists have identified a previously unknown oasis in Antarctica, marking the discovery of a new geographical feature on the southernmost continent.

The newly found oasis is located at an exposed rocky headland known as Cape Burks, as Russian media outlets report. The finding was announced by the press service of the Saint Petersburg Federal Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Researchers from the centre, working alongside scientists from the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, conducted a study of 18 previously unexplored lakes in West Antarctica. Their analysis concluded that the area represents a stable and cohesive natural system.

The newly identified oasis lies in a mountainous and valley-rich region, where the average annual temperature is around −12°C. The ice-free area spans approximately 2.2 square kilometres and supports local wildlife, including penguins, seals, Antarctic petrels, and other bird species.

Junior researcher Artyom Lapenkov explained that the site had initially been classified as a “nunatak” — a rocky outcrop rising above surrounding ice. However, after detailed examination of the lakes and their varying conditions, scientists concluded it should instead be classified as an oasis.

The institute’s scientific council has proposed naming the feature after polar explorer Arnold Budretsky, a state-decorated expert who led the Russian Antarctic Expedition of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute. The final decision on the name will be made by the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR), the research centre clarified.
