Russian strike on Kharkiv apartment building kills one, injures 37

Russian forces struck Ukraine’s northeastern city of Kharkiv on the morning of August 9, using three “Banderole” missiles, according to local officials.

One missile hit an apartment building in the city’s Saltivsky district, causing sections of the building from the sixth to the 10th floors to collapse. As of the morning of August 10, one person had been killed and 37 others injured.

Search and rescue operations remain underway as emergency crews continue clearing the rubble.

“We must clear and dismantle all structures to ensure that no one remains trapped under the rubble,” Bogdan Gladkikh, director of the Emergency Situations Department of the Kharkiv City Council, said on Ranok.LIVE.

Gladkikh said there were no reports of missing people. However, some of the apartments in the damaged building had been unoccupied since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, meaning rescuers must thoroughly search and clear the site.

He also said Russian forces had recently begun using newer weapons, including “Banderole” drones, Shahed-type jet-powered drones and other drones equipped with jet engines.

Separately, a Russian attack on Ukraine’s Poltava region on August 10 sparked fires at several gas stations, a private home and an industrial facility, according to preliminary information.

No deaths or injuries were reported in the Poltava region. Emergency crews have since extinguished the fires.
