Saudi Arabia voices support for Syrian people after Assad’s fall
Saudi Arabia has pledged its unwavering support for the Syrian people at what it described as a “critical stage” following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, marking a dramatic end to five decades of Baath Party rule.
In a statement issued on December 8, the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs underscored the Kingdom’s commitment to supporting Syria’s unity, stability, and sovereignty, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
“The Kingdom affirms its support for the brotherly Syrian people and their choices at this critical stage in Syria’s history, and calls for concerted efforts to preserve the unity of Syria and the cohesion of its people, in a way that protects it from slipping into chaos and division,” the ministry stated.
The statement called for international cooperation to assist Syria while emphasizing the importance of respecting its independence.
“The Kingdom affirms its support for anything that would achieve the security and stability of sisterly Syria in a way that preserves its sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity,” the ministry said, urging global actors to avoid interference in Syria’s internal affairs.
The Kingdom’s message also highlighted the devastating impact of the conflict on the Syrian people.
The Kingdom urged support for Syria "to help it overcome the devastation endured by the brotherly Syrian people over many years, which claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of innocent people and displaced millions, and during which foreign militias wreaked havoc in Syria, imposing external agendas on its people.”
Expressing optimism, Saudi Arabia acknowledged recent progress in safeguarding Syrian lives and preserving state institutions.
The Kingdom expressed its satisfaction with the "positive steps taken to ensure the safety of the brotherly Syrian people, to prevent bloodshed, and to preserve Syria’s state institutions and resources.”
The statement concluded with a hopeful vision for Syria’s future, stating:
“The time has come for the brotherly Syrian people to enjoy the dignified life they deserve, to contribute with all their components to shaping a bright future marked by security, stability, and prosperity, and for Syria to reclaim its rightful place in the Arab and Islamic worlds.”
The announcement came as scenes of jubilation erupted across Syria, with crowds looting the luxurious residence of Bashar al-Assad after opposition forces declared his departure from the country. The sweeping advances of anti-Assad forces in Damascus signaled a transformative moment for Syria and the broader region.
