Scholz predicts Trump’s backing as he refuses to supply Taurus missiles to Ukraine
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has reaffirmed his opposition to supplying Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine, stating that it would be a “wrong decision” to provide weapons capable of reaching deep into Russian territory.
In an interview with German media, Scholz emphasized that he believes US President-elect Donald Trump would support his stance on the issue, per Caliber.Az.
Scholz explained that he understands Trump’s position on such matters, noting, "If I understand correctly, this will be evaluated in a similar way in the future, particularly in transatlantic cooperation." He added that he interpreted Trump’s recent statements as aligning with his own position on not sending Taurus missiles to Ukraine.
Scholz’s comments come after Trump criticized US President Joe Biden’s approval of allowing Ukraine to strike Russian territory with long-range Western weapons, calling the decision “very stupid.” Trump also suggested he could reverse this policy upon taking office in January 2025.
Germany’s stance contrasts with that of the US, which in the fall authorized Ukraine to strike Russian military targets using long-range ATACMS missiles. Ukraine has also lifted restrictions on the use of Storm Shadow/SCALP missiles. However, Scholz believes that transferring Taurus missiles could escalate the conflict.
The US presidential election, held on November 5, saw Trump claim victory. On November 6, Democratic candidate Kamala Harris acknowledged his win, and leaders around the world, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, congratulated him. Trump’s inauguration is scheduled for January 20, 2025.
