The task force, named “Scorpion Strike” (TFSS), was formed following a directive issued earlier this year by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth. The directive called for the accelerated acquisition and deployment of more cost-effective and efficient systems for US forces operating in the region.
CENTCOM explained that the TFSS program is designed to rapidly equip American troops with advanced unmanned systems capable of countering both current and emerging threats on the battlefield.
“Equipping our skilled warfighters faster with cutting-edge drone capabilities showcases U.S. military innovation and strength, which deters bad actors,” said CENTCOM Commander Admiral Brad Cooper.
As part of the initiative, the US has already deployed low-cost combat drone systems known as LUCAS drones. These drones offer extended autonomous operational range and can be launched in multiple ways, including catapults, rocket-assisted takeoff, and mobile ground or transport platforms.
CENTCOM emphasised that this effort reflects broader modernisation initiatives for US military positions in the Middle East, particularly in response to evolving threats and the growing reliance on unmanned systems on the battlefield.
