Second Greek island declares emergency amid earthquake threat
Authorities imposed a state of emergency on a second Greek island Wednesday as earthquakes continued shaking the southeastern Aegean Sea.
The latest declaration for Amorgos follows a similar move for the famous tourist destination of Santorini on February 7, Caliber.Az reports citing AP. Back then, thousands of tremors were detected in an undersea area near both islands, along with Ios and Anafi—other popular holiday spots.
While scientists had hoped the seismic activity was subsiding, a series of magnitude 5 quakes has renewed concerns. Seismologists also observed that the earthquake epicenter is gradually shifting northward toward Amorgos.
The emergency status will allow for faster deployment of resources and emergency personnel. Authorities have already mobilized fire crews, police, the coast guard, and armed forces, focusing primarily on Santorini, where many residents and seasonal workers have evacuated.
