Sky News Arabia: US begins withdrawal of special forces from Syria's Deir ez-Zor province
16 April 2025 14:44
The United States military has begun withdrawing special forces units stationed at a key base near the Conoco gas field in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor province, according to a report by Sky News Arabia.
A convoy carrying American troops departed from the site, located in the eastern part of the country, and is now heading towards Iraqi Kurdistan, where one of the largest US military bases in the region is situated.
The U.S. military's presence in Syria has evolved over time, with troop numbers increasing from approximately 900 to 2,000 in late 2024. This surge was part of efforts to counter ISIS and stabilize the region following the fall of President Bashar al-Assad's regime.
