South Korea, Britain to jointly host AI Seoul Summit in May

13 April 2024 17:16

South Korea and Britain will jointly host a summit on artificial intelligence (AI) in May, the presidential office said on April 12, according to Yonhap.

The AI Seoul Summit, scheduled for May 21-22, is a follow-up to the AI Safety Summit held in England last November with the participation of countries including South Korea, the United States, Britain, Japan and Germany.

The upcoming meeting will focus on discussing ways to promote innovations, and foster inclusivity and mutual growth through the development of AI, the presidential office said in a press release.

On the evening of May 21, the leaders of participating nations will hold a virtual summit to discuss ways to guarantee AI safety, promote innovations and build an inclusive future.

On May 22, a ministerial meeting will be held to discuss specific areas of cooperation based on the summit discussions of the previous day, including measures to enhance AI safety in each country and develop sustainable AI.

Also on May 22, South Korea will host an AI Global Forum with the attendance of senior officials from countries around the world, key industry leaders and members of academia.

The forum was proposed by President Yoon Suk Yeol during his keynote address to the U.N. General Assembly last September.

"Our government expects the AI Global Forum, together with the AI Summit hosted by our government, to establish itself as a platform offering specific directions for the launch of a new AI global governance structure in the future," the presidential office said.
