South Korea signs AI safety partnership with OpenAI
South Korea has become the fourth country to establish a security partnership in artificial intelligence with OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, Yonhap reports, citing the Ministry of Science and ICT.
Under a memorandum of understanding, South Korea’s Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute (AISI) and OpenAI will collaborate on developing a global framework for evaluating AI security and safety standards.
The ministry said both sides will exchange technical expertise to design an AI safety assessment system that takes into account the Korean language and the country’s specific social and cultural context.
OpenAI has previously signed similar cooperation agreements with AI safety organisations in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan.
Officials said the latest partnership is expected to strengthen South Korea’s role in the international network focused on assessing risks associated with advanced AI systems and establishing global safety benchmarks.
The AISI and OpenAI are expected to hold a working-level meeting in the near future to finalise the details of their cooperation.
