Spain bans entry for two Israeli ministers amid diplomatic spat
Spain has officially barred Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich from entering its territory.
The announcement was made by Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares at a press conference, Caliber.Az reports, citing Israeli media.
The move marks the latest escalation in the diplomatic confrontation between Madrid and Jerusalem.
The ban follows Israel’s decision to impose sanctions on two Spanish ministers, accusing the Spanish government of promoting anti-Semitic policies. In response, Spain also recalled its ambassador from Tel Aviv for consultations.
Ben-Gvir, leader of the Otzma Yehudit party, has a history of provocative actions, including convictions for incitement to racism and supporting a terrorist organization in his youth. As National Security Minister, he oversees Israel’s police and has been criticized for failing to curb settler violence in the West Bank.
Smotrich, head of the Religious Zionist party, holds authority over West Bank settlements and has advocated for their expansion and annexation, while making controversial statements, such as suggesting in May 2025 that starving Gaza’s population could be “justified and moral” until hostages are released.
