Spain declares national emergency as wildfires rage out of control

Spain has declared a national state of emergency in the Madrid region and the neighbouring province of Ávila as massive wildfires continue to spread, forcing the evacuation of more than 10,000 people.

According to Spain's Ministry of Defence, the emergency measure was introduced as firefighters struggled to contain rapidly advancing blazes across parts of the Madrid autonomous community and the Castile and León region, Tass reports.

Emergency services said the fires remain uncontained and have yet to be brought under control, with strong winds and dry conditions hampering firefighting efforts.

Authorities have urged residents to follow evacuation orders as crews battle multiple fire fronts. More than 10,000 people have been forced to leave their homes since the fires intensified.

Meanwhile, an extremely high wildfire risk remains in place across almost all of Spain, raising concerns that further outbreaks could occur as hot, dry weather persists.
