Spain sends diplomatic note to Mexico Over King Felipe’s omission from inauguration
Spain has formally issued a note verbale to Mexico regarding the decision not to invite King Felipe VI to the inauguration of President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum.
According to the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the note emphasized that the king serves as the "head of state" and represents "the supreme authority of the Spanish state in international relations," Caliber.Az reports via Spanish media.
The ministry highlighted that King Felipe VI had attended the inaugurations of previous Mexican leaders, underscoring the importance of representation at such significant events.
The note further stated that Spain should be represented by its head of state at Sheinbaum's inauguration to reflect the mutual commitment to fostering relations between the two nations for the benefit of their "fraternal peoples."
The communication was delivered to the Mexican ambassador in Madrid, who was summoned to the Foreign Ministry.
Additionally, the head of the Spanish diplomatic mission in Mexico City personally conveyed the message following a visit to the Mexican Foreign Ministry.
