Spain to install maritime barrier along border with Morocco

Spain’s Civil Guard has begun installing a new maritime barrier at the southern breakwater of the autonomous city of Melilla in North Africa, which borders Morocco.

The Civil Guard said the installation “requires several stages,” so it has not yet specified when the project will be completed, Caliber.Az reports, citing El País.

The decision comes amid a migration crisis in the autonomous city of Ceuta, where a maritime barrier has also been installed.

At the end of July, tens of thousands of illegal migrants managed to reach Ceuta by swimming and on foot, bypassing the breakwater separating the city from Morocco. Amid the crisis, Madrid decided to deploy the military to help maintain security in the city.
