Spain turns corner on devastating wildfire, hundreds cleared to return

A major wildfire in southern Spain that has claimed at least 12 lives was largely brought under control on July 12, allowing hundreds of evacuated residents to return home.

According to AFP, Antonio Sanz, head of the regional emergency services, said that around 600 of the 1,500 people evacuated in Almería Province had been authorized to return to their homes. Firefighters have made significant progress in containing the blaze, authorities said.

He stated that the stabilization of most of the fire perimeter had made it possible to implement those measures and begin the process of returning to normal life.
