Spanish FM: Europe on verge of changing world order
Spain's Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, has voiced remarks about Europe's role in the rapidly shifting global order, emphasizing the continent's growing significance in safeguarding international stability.
In an interview with Spanish media, Albares stressed that Europe must adapt to new challenges and ensure its security in the face of rising threats, Caliber.Az reports.
Albares remarked on the recent confrontation between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the White House on February 28, calling it a symbolic moment in the transformation of global geopolitics. He noted that "Europe is more necessary than ever" in this context, underscoring the continent's critical role in shaping future international dynamics.
The Spanish minister pointed out that Europe faces numerous threats, including geopolitical instability and external interference. He emphasized the need for a robust analysis of these risks and the resources required to address them effectively. "We must act to ensure our security," Albares urged, calling for immediate measures to strengthen Europe's defense infrastructure and security frameworks.
Albares also discussed potential avenues for financing these efforts. He highlighted the European Investment Bank as a key resource and pointed to ongoing debates over the use of frozen Russian assets within Europe. Additionally, he advocated for the continued allocation of funds for defense and security, reinforcing the need for a comprehensive approach to crisis management.
While the European Union and the United States have long maintained strong cooperation, Albares expressed confidence that this partnership would remain vital moving forward. He reiterated Spain's unwavering support for Ukraine, particularly following Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's recent visit to Kyiv, during which an additional €1 billion in aid was announced.
"We are with them," Albares declared, referring to the Ukrainian people, and reaffirmed Spain's commitment to defending democracy, free from foreign interference and disinformation, as one of the core tenets of the European project.
