Spanish PM: Migration crisis linked to Morocco’s failed border control

Morocco’s border control system failed during the migration crisis in the autonomous city of Ceuta, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has said.

In an interview with CNN, he made clear that they need to return most of these migrants to their countries of origin, Caliber.Az reports.

“Over the last eight years we have developed very positive bilateral relationship with Morocco. We asked Morocco for answers and actions because it is clear for us that its border control mechanism failed,” he noted.

At the end of July, tens of thousands of undocumented migrants managed to reach Ceuta by swimming and wading around the breakwater separating the city from Morocco. Amid the crisis, Madrid decided to deploy the military to help maintain security in the city.

Up to 80,000 people may have entered the city, although the vast majority of them are believed to have already returned to Morocco, according to authorities.
