Spanish political forces demand NATO withdrawal, criticize US influence
Spain’s political forces, Podemos and United Left, have called for the country’s withdrawal from NATO, marking a significant challenge to the country’s foreign policy stance.
The two groups expressed their opposition to the alliance through statements shared on social media platform X, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.
Ione Belarra, Podemos secretary general and former minister of Social Rights (2021-2023), emphasized the need for an immediate exit from NATO, arguing that Spain should cease its military involvement in the alliance.
"It is necessary to withdraw immediately from NATO, close US military bases in Spain, and stop the increase in military spending," Belarra stated.
She further criticized Spain’s participation, accusing the country of defending the "imperialist interests of the United States."
Meanwhile, the United Left movement also voiced its strong opposition to NATO, describing it as a "criminal organization." The movement not only called for Spain’s departure from the alliance but also opposed further arms supplies to Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict.
