Spanish prosecutor’s office to review X, Meta, and TikTok
Spain’s Prosecutor’s Office is examining a government request to potentially launch an investigation into social media platforms X (formerly Twitter), Meta, and TikTok, according to the EFE news agency.
The review will focus on possible violations related to the creation and distribution of pornographic content involving minors using artificial intelligence technologies. The government submitted the initiative to the Prosecutor’s Office via the Council of Ministers on February 17. Officials said any decision on formal legal action will follow a review of the legal grounds and consultations with the Prosecutors’ Council.
The potential investigation forms part of a broader Spanish strategy to strengthen the regulation of digital platforms and enhance protections for minors online. Earlier, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, speaking at the World Government Summit in Dubai, announced plans to ban social media access for users under 16.
The outcome of the investigation remains uncertain.
