Spanish residents hold rally demanding general election
A big rally, demanding general election, has been held in Madrid, Spain.
Approximately 25,000 people participated in the rally, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
The rally was held under such a slogan as "For unity, dignity, law and freedom. General election now!" The protest was organised by a hundred associations united in the "Movement for Constitutional Spain". Many rally participants brought the country’s flags. The crowd also chanted slogans against Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. Representatives from opposition parties joined the protest as well.
Protest organisers expressed concerns about a serious deterioration of democracy in Spain, citing the government's alleged "purchase of parliamentary support through measures that undermine equality, interterritorial solidarity, and the rule of law, Libertad Digital newspaper wrote.
Moreover, the rally organisers highlighted that Sánchez was not the winner of the recent general election and noted that he secured the position of prime minister with the backing of parties that share a "common element of aversion and hostility towards Spanish democracy." General election in Spain is scheduled for 2027. The recent election was held in summer 2023, resulting in the conservative People's Party, led by Alberto Núñez Feijóo, securing the most seats in parliament.
However, the People's Party did not secure an absolute majority of seats, preventing it from independently confirming its leader as prime minister. The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party, led by Sánchez, ranked second in the election. The party managed to secure support from other political forces for Sánchez's candidacy, including parties advocating for Catalonia's independence. As a result, the parliament approved the socialist leader as prime minister by a majority vote.
