Sri Lanka's fourth minister resigns
Sri Lanka's Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraveera, who also heads the island nation's Wildlife Conservation and Forest Resources Ministry, announced his resignation on July 10.
Deputies Manusha Nanayakkara, Harin Fernando and Bandula Gunawardena also announced that they were vacating their ministerial portfolios, Sri Lankan news portal Ada Derana reports.
The head of the Sri Lanka presidential press service, Sudeva Hettiarachchi, also resigned.
On July 9, protesters broke into the private residence of Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe and set it on fire. In the morning of the same day, protests resumed in the country. Residents took to the streets of the country's capital, demanding the resignation of the incumbent president. Crowds of demonstrators overcame the barricades, climbed over the fence and seized the territory of the presidential residence.
Due to the deterioration of the situation, the Sri Lanka prime minister called an emergency meeting of party leaders in order to find a quick solution.
During the meeting, the party leaders called on the president to resign.
Sri Lanka is experiencing the worst economic crisis since independence in 1948. Because of this, socio-political tensions have grown. Mass protests began in the country in April.
