Stakes of Russia's war "stretch far beyond Ukraine", says US defence minister
Lloyd Austin commemorated the "solemn" one-year anniversary of the war in Ukraine with a stark statement on February 24.
The US defence secretary described the conflict as the "most urgent danger to European security" since the Second World War, Sky News reports.
"Today's solemn anniversary is an opportunity for all who believe in freedom, rules, and sovereignty to recommit ourselves to supporting Ukraine's brave defenders for the long haul - and to recall that the stakes of Russia's war stretch far beyond Ukraine," he said.
Mr Austin added that the US has sent $32bn in defence aid to Ukraine since last February. It has also pledged to provide 109 Bradley Fighting Vehicles and 31 Abrams tanks.
It comes shortly after the US announced a raft of additional support measures for Ukraine, including energy assistance, weapons and sanctions.
The Biden administration will send drones, a "large amount" of artillery, and mine-clearing equipment to the front line.
A shipment of mobile generators is to arrive by the end of March, following Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure, and Joe Biden plans to provide up to £207m ($250m) in emergency energy assistance if Congress agrees.
Additionally, the US treasury today sanctioned 200 individuals and companies across Russia, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
