Three Germans detained for crossing Finland-Russia border illegally
Finnish Border Guard has detained three young German men suspected of illegally crossing into Russia on snowshoes, after intercepting them returning to Finland on January 14.
The alleged border crossing occurred in Paljakka, Kuusamo, where no fence or physical barrier was present, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
A Kainuu Border Guard District patrol apprehended the tourists immediately upon their return.
Officials said the men admitted to crossing the border but claimed they were driven by curiosity.
Captain Juha Romppainen, company commander of the Kainuu Border Guard District, noted that the trio was aware that entering the border zone was forbidden.
Romppainen added that the case will soon be forwarded to the prosecutor for potential criminal charges, which could be applied before the tourists leave Finland if the prosecutor approves.
