US senators arrive in Denmark to reaffirm support for Greenland
On Friday, January 16, a bipartisan delegation of US senators arrived in Copenhagen to express support for Denmark and Greenland amid Donald Trump’s threats to annex the island.
According to the Danish media, eleven American lawmakers led by Democratic Senator Chris Coons arrived in the Danish capital. During the visit, talks are expected with Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and her Greenlandic counterpart, Jens-Frederik Nielsen.
Democratic Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois emphasised upon arrival that statements made by the US president regarding Greenland do not reflect the views of the American people.
“We have been friends and allies of Denmark and Greenland for decades. We want them to know that we value that greatly,” he said.
