Suspicious object prompts new alarm at UK military base in Cyprus
An alert was triggered for the second time within 24 hours at the British Akrotiri airbase in Cyprus after a suspicious object was detected, according to reports from the Cypriot broadcaster RIK.
At approximately 12:20 local time, residents living near the base as well as base personnel received a warning message indicating a potential threat. Authorities immediately implemented security measures.
However, officials later determined that the object did not pose any danger to Cyprus, and the alert was lifted about 10 minutes later.
The incident follows a similar alarm late on March 4, when sirens were activated at around 22:44 local time. That alert remained in effect for roughly 20 minutes before being cancelled.
The repeated alarms come amid heightened tensions in the region. On March 2, the UK Ministry of Defence reported that Akrotiri airbase had been targeted by an Iranian drone attack.
The base is one of the United Kingdom’s key military installations in the Eastern Mediterranean and plays an important role in regional military operations.
