Sweden tightens drone rules: violations could lead to fines or prison

05 December 2025 15:13

The Swedish Transport Agency announced on December 4 that it will impose stricter rules on drone pilots starting January 1, citing a rise in dangerous drone activity near airports, large crowds, and restricted areas.

Under the new regulations, flying drones weighing 250 grams or more without a pilot license will be considered a criminal offense, punishable by fines or, in severe cases, up to six months in prison. Authorities emphasised that adherence to air traffic rules is essential to prevent collisions with manned aircraft and protect people on the ground, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media

The pilot license, introduced in 2021 in line with EU-wide rules, includes mandatory training on safe drone operation, restricted zones, and emergency procedures. The government aims to increase safety as the number of drone operators continues to grow.

The move follows incidents such as the November 6 drone sighting over Gothenburg Landvetter Airport, Sweden’s second-largest airport, which forced a temporary closure for several hours and disrupted flights. Similar concerns have prompted Germany to form a federal police unit to detect and intercept drones near airports and critical infrastructure.
