Sweden to support Ukraine's green transition and energy security under new agreement

17 March 2025 18:24

Swedish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Business, and Industry, Ebba Busch, and Ukrainian Energy Minister, German Galushchenko, have signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen cooperation in energy and green transition efforts in Brussels.

The agreement focuses on expanding collaboration in nuclear energy, energy security, and advancing the green transition in industry, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

Ebba Busch emphasized Sweden's unwavering support for Ukraine, stating, "In an unstable world, Sweden's support for Ukraine remains firm. Sweden will support Ukraine for as long as necessary. Ukraine's resilience in the energy sector, as well as in general, is an example for all countries. Through this partnership, we look forward to working together and learning from each other to strengthen our energy infrastructure and, using fossil fuel-free energy, create the conditions for transforming our societies."

Sweden, with its extensive experience in integrating renewable energy sources into the grid, will offer valuable insights to Ukraine, especially in light of the country's green transition and efforts to align with the European Union. The memorandum outlines the framework for cooperation, building on discussions that began during Busch's visit to Kyiv.

Earlier, on March 13, Sweden announced that it would provide $137.7 million to support Ukraine's reconstruction and address its urgent humanitarian needs. This marks Sweden’s largest-ever civilian aid program. Swedish Minister for International Development, Benjamin Dusa, explained that the funds would be used for infrastructure rebuilding, mine clearance, and healthcare worker training. Dusa also noted that Sweden's support for Ukraine is directly linked to the country's own security.

Additionally, Sweden is set to authorize the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration to procure and donate RBS 70 and Tridon Mk2 air defence systems to Ukraine. In collaboration with international partners, Sweden will also contribute funds for additional air defence systems to bolster Ukraine’s defence capabilities.
