Swedish diplomat charged over alleged mishandling of classified information
Swedish authorities have formally charged a diplomat over the alleged improper handling of classified documents, in a case linked to national security concerns.
According to prosecutors, the charges were filed on April 24 and relate to the unlawful removal and storage of sensitive materials containing highly classified information. The diplomat, whose identity and position have not been disclosed, is accused of taking documents from an official archive and keeping them at his home and a country residence, Caliber.Az reports, citing Swedish media.
Prosecutor Mats Lönqvist said the information involved is of a highly sensitive nature. While the diplomat had authorised access to the materials in the course of his duties, he was not permitted to remove them from the workplace, the prosecutor noted.
The suspect, reportedly over the age of 60, has worked for many years within Sweden’s Foreign Ministry. He was initially detained in May 2025, and the investigation remains ongoing.
