Swedish FM affirms non-recognition of Russian occupation in Ukraine

24 November 2025 16:06

Swedish Foreign Minister (FM) Maria Malmer Stenergard stated that Stockholm does not recognise Russia’s occupation of Ukrainian territories and will maintain an unchanged position regarding the war.

She noted that Ukraine has repeatedly emphasised its readiness for a full ceasefire and peace negotiations, yet Russia has not shown willingness to take constructive steps, Caliber.Az reports, citing The Guardian.

“Since Russia has not changed its position, neither has Sweden nor the EU. Our position remains that to achieve a just and lasting peace, borders cannot be changed by force,” the foreign minister stressed.

Stenergard said that all territories temporarily occupied by Russia remain Ukrainian. “Let me be clear, Sweden will not recognise Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea or any other part of Ukraine’s territory. We will not reward aggression,” Stenergard stated.

The minister also added that any restrictions on the Ukrainian Armed Forces are unacceptable.

According to her, an agreement that respects Ukraine’s sovereignty and gains the support of Ukrainian society will receive full backing from Sweden.

FM reminded that Stockholm intends to continue its policy of strengthening Ukraine and weakening Russia as long as the aggression persists.

Earlier reports indicated that following talks in Geneva on November 23, Ukraine and the US prepared an updated draft framework for a peace settlement.

Additionally, the UK, Germany, and France developed their own counterproposals to the US 28-point plan, aiming to make it more favourable for Ukraine.
