Switzerland takes crown as Europe’s most romantic spot VIDEO
In a recent article, Travel+Leisure highlights that it's time to discover why Switzerland has claimed the top spot as Europe’s most romantic destination. From breathtaking landscapes to world-class wine regions and luxurious resorts, Switzerland is proving that romance is more than just a French affair.
In February, European Waterways released the results of its study on the most romantic destinations in Europe, revealing a surprising shift in rankings. The study evaluated destinations based on several key factors, including the number of romantic and fine dining restaurants, Michelin-starred establishments, wine bars with four-star ratings or above, available tours and wine tastings, and the presence of vineyards.
"For years, France has been considered the pinnacle of romance, home to enchanting cities like Paris, Bordeaux, and Carcassonne. However, recent data reveals a shift in the rankings," the company stated.
After analyzing the data, Switzerland emerged as the most romantic European destination, earning 269 points, surpassing France, which scored 250 points.
"France, while still a heavyweight in the romance category, has faced stiff competition from Switzerland’s unique offerings," said Maryanne Sparkes, a travel expert at European Waterways. "While destinations like Avignon, Bordeaux, and Carcassonne remain popular for their rich history and culinary excellence, Switzerland’s ability to provide both adventure and intimacy has propelled it to the top."
Sparkes added that Switzerland’s focus on quality over quantity, combined with stunning wine regions like Lavaux and Valais, gives the country a clear edge for those seeking an unforgettable romantic experience. The country's breathtaking landscapes and luxurious offerings make it a top destination for foodies, wine lovers, and romantics alike.
Switzerland's luxury appeal was also highlighted in the study, with high-end resorts such as the Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski in St. Moritz, The Woodward in Geneva, and the Mandarin Oriental Palace Luzern in Lucerne offering the perfect blend of relaxation and elegance. These resorts, known for their spa retreats and plush rooms, are ideal for couples seeking both comfort and romance. And, as many know, Switzerland’s scenery is spectacular year-round—from the vibrant flower fields around Lake Lucerne in spring to the snow-capped peaks of Verbier in winter.
Greece and Italy also made the list, with special mentions for romantic destinations such as Santorini, the Amalfi Coast, and Positano. However, for those who have already planned a romantic getaway to France, don't worry. The study still highlighted several places across the country where romance abounds, ensuring love is in the air no matter where you go.
