Syria, Jordan explore energy cooperation following new gas supplies
Syria and Jordan are moving to strengthen energy cooperation, following the start of natural gas supplies from Amman to Damascus, officials said on January 13.
Syrian Energy Minister Mohammad al-Bashir met with Jordan’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Saleh al-Kharabsheh, on the sidelines of the Fifth International Mining Conference in Saudi Arabia, Caliber.Az reports via Syrian media.
The ministers discussed boosting bilateral energy ties, sharing technical expertise, and exploring joint projects across multiple energy sectors, the statement said.
Last week, Syria’s Energy Ministry announced that it had begun receiving around 4 million cubic meters of natural gas per day from Jordan.
The supplies are intended to support electricity generation and help alleviate chronic power shortages in Syria, under an agreement worth $800 million.
On January 8, Syria started receiving natural gas from Jordan under a long-term agreement, the country’s Ministry of Energy announced.
Daily deliveries could reach up to 4 million cubic meters, the ministry said, adding that the gas will be used to boost electricity generation and help address chronic power shortages.
