Syria begins receiving Jordanian gas under $800 million supply deal
Syria’s Ministry of Energy announced on January 8 that the country has begun receiving natural gas from Jordan for use in the electricity sector, in line with a gas-purchase agreement concluded with the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The ministry stated that daily deliveries could reach as much as 4 million cubic meters.
According to Syrian media, the ministry noted in a message posted on its official Telegram channel that this development will substantially enhance electricity supply across the country, consistent with the operational plans approved for power plants.
The ministry further specified that the agreement is part of a long-term gas procurement contract valued at approximately $800 million per year. The contract reflects the government’s policy of securing stable and sustainable energy sources and improving the quality of services provided to the population.
It was also emphasised that the start of gas imports from Jordan forms part of a broader strategy to reform Syria’s energy sector, with the objective of increasing production capacity and achieving meaningful improvements in the national electricity supply.
