Syria moves to restore oil production in Raqqa, Deir Ezzor PHOTO

20 January 2026 19:10

The Syrian Energy Ministry has begun a comprehensive assessment of oil fields recently recaptured in the provinces of Raqqa and Deir Ezzor, as part of efforts to rehabilitate critical energy infrastructure and restore future production.

Energy Minister Mohammad al-Bashir visited the al-Thawra oil field in the countryside of Raqqa to evaluate its condition following its recapture by government forces from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The visit forms part of a broader inspection campaign targeting newly recovered oil assets in line with national energy and reconstruction plans, SANA reports.

During his tour, al-Bashir stressed the importance of conducting detailed technical evaluations of wells, pipelines and production facilities to determine maintenance and repair requirements. He underscored that reviving the oil sector is a strategic priority, describing it as essential for achieving sustainable energy production and supporting the country’s broader economic recovery.

In a separate inspection, Syrian Petroleum Company Chief Executive Officer Youssef Qablawi visited the al-A’zbah oil field in Deir Ezzor to assess its operational readiness and confirm its potential for a return to production.

The oil fields in Raqqa and Deir Ezzor rank among Syria’s most productive energy assets. Both the al-Thawra and al-A’zbah fields are known for containing significant reserves of light crude oil, which is comparatively easier and less costly to refine than heavier grades.

Officials say the inspections highlight the government’s ongoing efforts to secure strategic natural resources, boost domestic energy output and improve basic services in areas brought back under state control. The rehabilitation of these oil fields is expected to play a key role in strengthening Syria’s energy security and supporting reconstruction in formerly contested regions.
