Syria seeks security deal, not conflict with Israel, says president

26 July 2026 17:07

Conflict with Israel is not in Syria's interest, as Damascus is seeking to reach a security agreement with the Jewish state, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa said in an interview with Al Jazeera.

Al-Sharaa stated that Syria feared military escalation in the region and was seeking to avoid confrontation with Israel, adding that Damascus, with the assistance of friendly countries, was working to reach a security agreement with Israel.

According to the Syrian president, if such an agreement is approved by both sides, it could pave the way for comprehensive peace in the Middle East.

At the same time, al-Sharaa stressed that Syria will not make concessions regarding its inalienable rights to the Golan Heights, which were occupied in 1967.
