Syria targets Iranian-linked figures in war crimes, drug trafficking sweep

Members of the General Security of the Military Operations Administration have conducted a sweeping arrest campaign in Al-Jafra village, located in eastern Deir Ezzor city of Syria. 

The area, known for housing Iranian militias, became the focal point of operations targeting individuals accused of war crimes, Caliber.Az reports via Syrian media.

Among those apprehended were several former members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, including a prominent commander, Abo Al-Fadl. Hailing from Al-Mayadeen city, Abo Al-Fadl has gained notoriety as one of the region's leading figures in drug trafficking.

To recall, Iran emphasized its intention to maintain relations with Syria following the fall of its long-standing ally, Bashar al-Assad. However, Tehran highlighted that Syria’s stance on Israel will be a critical factor in shaping future ties.

“Their distance from the Zionist regime will be an important deciding factor,” said government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani during a press briefing. 

Reports have surfaced suggesting that Iran has established direct communication with armed groups responsible for ousting Assad’s regime, though Tehran has not officially confirmed this.

Iran played a pivotal role in supporting al-Assad during Syria’s conflict, providing military aid and personnel to bolster his government and sustain its “axis of resistance” against Israel and the United States.

Mohajerani further disclosed that 4,000 Iranian citizens had returned from Syria via flights organized by Mahan Airlines since the regime change, reflecting efforts to manage post-conflict logistics amid ongoing sanctions.
