Syrian president, Saudi crown prince discuss boosting cooperation

06 January 2026 17:30

Syria's President Ahmed al-Sharaa and Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation in a phone conversation on January 6.

During the discussion, the leaders explored ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in economic development and investment, and also reviewed regional developments and a range of issues of mutual interest, Caliber.Az reports via Syrian media.

To recall, Ahmed al‑Sharaa was declared interim president of Syria in January 2025 after opposition forces toppled the long‑time Assad regime. His government has been actively seeking diplomatic recognition and ties with Arab and Western states.

Saudi Arabia welcomed al‑Sharaa shortly after he took office — his first foreign visit as president was to Riyadh in February 2025, where he met Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to discuss improving bilateral relations and cooperation in humanitarian, economic, and development fields.
