Syrian president to announce list of appointed parliament members
Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa will unveil the list of appointed members of parliament on July 1.
Under the announcement, al-Sharaa will reveal a list of 70 lawmakers appointed to the parliament.
The Syrian president is responsible for appointing one-third of parliament’s members — 70 out of 210 seats — with the rest selected through voting.
Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa was appointed transitional president in late January 2025 following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in December 2024.
In March 2025, al-Sharaa signed a constitutional declaration establishing a five-year transitional period under a presidential system, creating a 210-member People's Assembly (parliament) where he holds the power to directly appoint one-third of the members while the rest are chosen indirectly through appointed electoral committees.
Indirect elections for a portion of the seats occurred in October 2025 under a controlled process that drew criticism for limited public participation and influence by al-Sharaa-aligned bodies, with some seats left vacant in certain regions.
