Syrian president to visit Berlin after earlier trip was scrapped
Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa is set to travel to Berlin on Monday, March 30, 2026, in what will be a rescheduled visit after a previously planned trip in mid-January was cancelled at the last moment.
According to Bild, the upcoming visit has drawn attention to the expected agenda of talks between al-Sharaa and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
Officials anticipate that discussions will focus in particular on the future of Syrian refugees living in Germany, an issue that has been central since Merz extended an invitation to the Syrian leader in November 2025.
A spokesperson for the German government declined to confirm the precise timing of the meeting, noting that “official dates for the Federal Chancellor are usually announced on the Friday of the preceding week.”
