Drone-hit tanker Kairos remains blocked near Bulgarian coast updated / photo

06 December 2025 12:09

The tanker Kairos, which was struck by a drone in Turkish waters, continues to be anchored off the coast of Ahtopol, Bulgaria, according to Bulgarian sources.

The vessel, one of two ships targeted by drones in the Turkish waters of the Black Sea, had drifted into Bulgarian territorial waters, but authorities have so far been unable to evacuate the crew. Ten crew members remain on board and have requested assistance from Bulgarian authorities.

Heavy waves prevented any rescue operation yesterday, though authorities have confirmed that if weather conditions improve, emergency services are ready to proceed with the evacuation. The tanker is currently secured in place with its anchor.

A Border Police boat and two marine tugboats are on standby to support the operation. Officials from the crisis headquarters in Burgas noted that there is no evidence of oil on board the tanker, minimising the risk of environmental contamination.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, ensuring the safety of the crew and the surrounding areas.

A tanker has run aground off the coast of Ahtopol, Bulgaria, authorities reported.

According to the regional administration of Burgas, cited by Bulgarian media, the situation is fully under control. There is no threat to local residents’ lives or health, and no environmental contamination has been detected.

The vessel’s crew of 10 remains safe and is fully equipped with protective gear. They maintain constant communication with shore authorities.

Preliminary reports indicate that the tanker is empty and was not carrying oil, significantly reducing ecological risks. The starboard anchor has already been deployed, and the crew is working to lower the port anchor to stabilise the ship further.

Experts have noted that due to challenging weather conditions, any active operations, including evacuation or technical interventions, should be carried out only during daylight hours to ensure maximum safety.

The regional emergency crisis headquarters is coordinating all relevant agencies. The area is also under aerial surveillance by a border police helicopter equipped with thermal imaging cameras. All pertinent ministries have been notified and are ready to respond if the situation changes.

Authorities have advised residents to remain calm. The incident is being closely monitored in real time, and there is currently no reason for concern.
