More than 80 people have been injured and at least 12 arrested across Spain during celebrations following the national team’s World Cup triumph, according to Spanish media.

The incidents occurred as thousands of fans gathered in cities across the country to celebrate Spain’s victory. Police reported seven arrests in Madrid, with further detentions made elsewhere.

The celebrations were also marked by tragedy, with two people killed, including a 13-year-old boy.

A 13-year-old boy has died after a public fountain collapsed during celebrations of Spain's World Cup victory in the western Spanish town of Ciudad Rodrigo, local authorities said.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday (July 20) at the Árbol Gordo fountain, a popular gathering place for public celebrations in the town of around 12,000 people in Salamanca province, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

At least two other people were injured when part of the stone structure gave way.

According to local authorities, the boy was inside the fountain while several people had climbed onto its upper platform to celebrate Spain's triumph. The platform collapsed, causing heavy stonework to fall onto those below.

The teenager was trapped beneath the debris and suffered critical injuries before being taken to a local health centre, where he later died.

Ciudad Rodrigo Town Council expressed its condolences to the victim's family and described the incident as a tragedy for the entire community.

"What should have been a celebration of the Spanish national team's World Cup victory has turned into a tragedy for the whole of Ciudad Rodrigo," the council said in a statement, adding that it wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Deputy Mayor Ramón Sastre said the town was "shocked" by the incident, noting that the fountain had long been a traditional venue for sporting celebrations and that there had been no indication of structural problems.

"The fountain is regularly inspected and cleaned, and there is no record of any structural damage," Sastre said. He added that flags at the town hall would fly at half-mast for three days as a mark of mourning.

Residents said crowds routinely gather at the fountain during major sporting victories, with people often climbing onto the structure while waving flags and celebrating. Police officers were called to the scene and helped remove the fallen stonework that had trapped the teenager.

The circumstances surrounding the collapse are under investigation.
