Tehran aims for strategic partnership agreement with Moscow at BRICS Summit
Iran is working to finalize a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement with Russia at the upcoming BRICS summit in Kazan.
This ambition was expressed by Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Ashgabat, Caliber.Az reports referring to Russian media.
“I hope we will conclude this treaty during the BRICS summit in Russia,” Pezeshkian stated, as reported by his press service.
He highlighted the alignment between the two nations, saying, “Our positions are much more similar compared to other countries.” This meeting was significant as it marked the first interaction between the Russian and Iranian presidents since Pezeshkian's election. It took place during the international forum titled “Interconnection of Times and Civilizations - the Basis for Peace and Development” in Turkmenistan's capital.
The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty, which has completed all necessary signing procedures, is anticipated to play a crucial role in strengthening relations between Russia and Iran.
On September 18, President Putin approved the draft of the treaty. By October 4, Kazem Jalali, Iran's ambassador to Moscow, confirmed that the document was ready for signing.
Shortly after his election on July 5, Pezeshkian indicated in a phone call with Putin that he was prepared to sign the strategic partnership agreement at the BRICS summit in October. He underscored the significance of relations with Russia, referring to it as Iran's “friend and neighbour.”
Pezeshkian also emphasized the importance of cooperation between the two countries within BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
