Tesla’s Shanghai Megafactory gears up for official launch on Feb. 11
Tesla’s Shanghai Megafactory, dedicated to producing energy storage products, is set to officially begin production next week, following a successful trial run that commenced in late 2024.
Tesla plans to hold a ceremony to mark the official launch of production at the factory on February 11, 2025, Caliber.Az reports referencing international media.
The Megafactory will begin ramping up its production capacity in the first quarter of 2025.
The factory, which was completed at the end of December 2024, was built in just seven months, showcasing what is referred to as “Tesla Speed,” the report states.
Construction of the Shanghai Megafactory started on May 23, 2024, marking Tesla's first energy storage project outside of the United States. Located in the Lingang district of Pudong, Shanghai, the facility is situated alongside Tesla’s existing EV production site in China, which manufactures the Model 3 and Model Y.
Shanghai Lingang Economic Development Group, Tesla’s first Chinese customer for the Megapack, signed the first orders at the groundbreaking ceremony last May. On December 31, Chinese state-run media reported that the Megafactory had completed construction and begun trial production, with mass production slated to begin in early 2025.
The Shanghai Megafactory primarily produces the Megapack, Tesla’s ultra-large commercial energy storage battery. Megapack units are designed to store and supply energy to help stabilize the grid and prevent power outages. Tesla plans to produce up to 10,000 Megapack units annually, providing nearly 40 GWh of energy storage. This is enough power to supply 50,000 homes in Shanghai for an entire year. Each Megapack can store more than 3 MWh of energy, enough to power 3,600 homes for an hour.
In June 2024, some media outlets suggested that CATL would be the main supplier of the battery cells for the Shanghai Megapack, with BYD’s FinDreams Battery serving as an alternative supplier.
